Seven Phrases of Rage in Arabic

غَضَب

root: غ-ض-ب / noun / definition: anger

My mind feels switched off today, and I think it’s because I poured out all of my thoughts into the other post. I talked about the word عدن, my PhD status upgrade, and my search for olive leaves to burn.

My friend said she liked that metaphor—about burning the olive leaves. I told her it was a tradition and not a metaphor, but I think the lines are blurred anyway.

But less about metaphors and more about synonyms, please.

I noticed that, over the course of nearly 300 Wehr Wednesdays posts, we’ve explored quite a few phrases related to anger.

So let’s take a look at a random collection of phrases used to describe someone fuming with rage:

verb: form X, hollow

seen in: Wehr Wednesdays #19

verb: form VII, geminate

verbs: both form IV, أرغى is defective and أزبد is sound

seen in: Wehr Wednesdays #291

verb: form VIII, sound

verb: form I, sound

seen in: Wehr Wednesdays #207

verb: form I, hollow

verb: form VIII, sound

As always with these synonyms lists, this is certainly not an exhaustive collection of Arabic phrases about anger!

We explored an interesting rage-related phrase in Wehr Wednesdays #185 too, but I wasn’t sure if it was synonymous enough to be added to this list. What do you think?

I’m still waiting for my brain to switch on, but I guess that means it’s time for me to log off. Adios.
