A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

شرد به الفكر (fikru) he became lost in thought
Root: ش-ر-د
Page: 541*
Example: “رَنَوتُ إلى البَدرِ عَبرَ النافِذةِ وَشَرَدَ بي الفِكر”
Translation: “I gazed at the full moon through the window and became lost in thought”
Notes:
- Notice the presence of the causative بـ in today’s phrase
- The verb رَنا / يَرنو إلى means “to gaze at”, so it’s another word that could be added to our list in Arabic Verbs for “to Look at”—we also had another (but quadriliteral!) verb for “to gaze at” in Wehr Wednesdays #83
