A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.


الباب مفتوح على مصراعيه (miṣrā’aihi) the door is wide open


Root: ص-ر-ع

Page: 597*

Example: “فَنَقولُ لَهُم إنَّ البابَ مَفْتوحٌ عَلى مِصراعَيهِ لِلحِوار”

Translation: “so we say to them that the door is wide open for discussion”


Notes:

  • مِصراعَيه is a combination of the dual form of مصراع (i.e. مصراعَينِ) and the possessive pronoun suffix ـه—when a possessive suffix is added to a dual noun, the ن disappears, hence مصراعيه!
