شمر عن ساعد الجد (s. al-jidd) to buckle down to a job, rally all one’s forces, put one’s shoulder to the wheel

Example: “فَشَمَّرتُ عَن ساعِدِ الجِدِّ وَبَدَأتُ بِتَرجَمةِ الديوان”

Translation: “so I buckled down and began translating the poetry collection”
