Wehr Wednesdays #100

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

استغلق عليه الكلام (kalāmu) he was unable to speak, he was struck dumb, he was speechless

Root: غ-ل-ق

Page: 798*

Example: “حينَما رَأَوا الأَطْلالَ، اِستَغلَقَ عَلَيهِم الكلام”

Translation: “when they saw the ruins, they were speechless”

Notes:

  • This phrase is similar in form (and meaning) to استعصى عليه اللفظ which we covered in Wehr Wednesdays #59
  • Seeing as this is the 100th Wehr Wednesdays post(!), this is the last of the vocabulary to be added to the Wehr Wednesdays Vocab (#1-100) Quizlet set—going forward, we’ll hopefully have a new vocab set for posts #101-200 in the series!
  • If you know of any cool/odd/interesting/useful Arabic vocabulary that you think your fellow Arabic nerds would like to see in this series, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
