A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.


ازدان فراشه بولد (firāšuhū bi-waladin) his bed was graced with a son, i.e., a son was born to him

Example: “بَعْدَ سِنين مِنَ الدُّعاءِ، قَدِ ازْدانَ فِراشُهُ بِبِنْت”

Translation: “after years of supplication, he was blessed with a baby girl”


Notes:

  • اِزْدانَ / يَزْدانُ is a form VIII verb from the hollow root ز-ي-ن; you’ll also notice how assimilation has taken place in this verb (ت > د)—for more on assimilation, see this post!
