لِسان
root: ل-س-ن / noun / plural: أَلسِنة، أَلسُن / definition: tongue, language
I’m on day 3 of a five-day run of meetings and meet-ups. TfL continues to fleece me, my average step count continues to rise, and I continue to wonder what kind of rehab my introverted self will need after this.
Popping into the Hackney Cypriot Association today, I was too shy of my broken mother tongue to open my mouth.
I mumbled a few “iyi“s and “güzel“s and made off with two boxes of freshly-made bulgur köftes that were as familiar to my tongue as the dialects chattering around me. There’s something about that connection, isn’t there?
Language must have a taste.
If not, the metaphors in my mind would fall apart at the synapses, and this blog post wouldn’t have a title.
It’s been around three weeks since I submitted my first main PhD chapter. I can’t work out whether I’m getting closer to understanding metaphor—or if the deeper I go, the further removed I become from it.
I can’t allow myself to dwell too much, because the process of studying already feels abstract and metaphorical at times and I’m hoping to have a tangible, paper thesis in my hands by mid-2027 rather than a semantic mirage flickering up ahead.
Maybe you, too, feel like that sometimes.
Maybe your Arabic-learning journey is looking hazy in the distance, or you’re unsure of how to overcome those pesky roadblocks. Or maybe you’re eager to work on new projects related to Arabic, but need some guidance.
And that’s exactly where I can help.
Outside of this blog and my PhD (and the several projects I always seem to have on-the-go), I’m a language consultant. I’ve primarily worked with language-learning apps and authors to craft and advise on content. But now I’m expanding my services to you.
Whether you need advice on a project related to Arabic or want some guidance as an Arabic learner, simply book a consultation with me and let’s work together to achieve your goals.
Turn that mirage into an oasis. Taste the language. It’s just a click away.
!مع السلامة
