تَطْريز
root: ط-ر-ز / form II verbal noun / definition: embroidery
September feels notably less hot and humid than August here, but maybe—just maybe—I’ve successfully acclimatised to Doha’s weather in these four short weeks.
Or maybe it’s that I’ve been keeping myself busy with things like the Palestinian embroidery (التطريز الفلسطيني) workshop I attended on Friday (and my other adventures), so I haven’t been paying much attention to the fog on my glasses.
And maybe it’s the fact that I keep seeing boxes of stuffed dates that I felt it right to type this post today.
Perhaps two of the more common collective nouns for dates (the fruit, in case there’s any confusion) are: تَمْر and بَلَح.
Here are some other words for dates I’ve come across:
بُسْر
unripe dates
لَمْسيّة
a date that isn’t fully ripe
رُطَب
fresh, ripe dates
هَنَم
dried dates
عَجْوة
pressed dates
حَشَف
dates of inferior quality
As always in the Uncommon Arabic Words for… series, I’ll be updating this list whenever I discover new words. Have you come across any other Arabic words for dates?
!مع السلامة
