مُسَجَّل
root: س-ج-ل / adjective, form II passive participle / definition: recorded
When you’ve written hundreds of posts like I have on this blog, you start to forget what you have and haven’t posted about.
And I was half-certain I’d mentioned this resource before on here, but—after a few seconds with the search box—I guess I was wrong. So, good news: I have an amazing resource to share!
It must have been one or two years ago now (or more… has anyone really been counting since the first pandemic lockdown?) since I came across the YouTube channel for video lectures from the Islamic University of Gaza (IUG). It’s really a gem.
There are literally thousands of recorded university lectures on the channel, most of which are in Arabic.
Now, this is particularly useful for Arabic students because it means that we can find a course that interests us in the playlists and immerse in subject-specific Arabic terminology whilst also learning about the topic.
Plus, us nerds get to feel like we’re in a lecture hall again. (Being at the front of the classroom, teaching, just isn’t the same.)
I’ve pretty much only watched the lectures about Arabic literature, but you can find ones about science and technology, mathematics, history, law, economics, and a whole lot more.
Unfortunately, we’re at a point in time where we can’t mention Gaza without speaking out about the ongoing genocide there.
And the Occupation are not only targeting people, but also academic institutions in order to solidify the erasure of Palestinian intellectual heritage. As such, the IUG—which sits in Gaza City—was intentionally struck back in October.
I think this only makes it more important to amplify the voices of Palestinian scholars—something which, thanks to the internet, is very much achievable for us wherever we are.
And in these last days of Ramadan, I very much hope we’ll see an end to the atrocities being committed in the world.
.في أمان الله
