Back in December, we explored the مَـ of place and time. Today, we’re taking a look at three phrases meaning “to take someone or something’s place” that combine a verb with a place noun from the same root:
حَلَّ / يَحلُّ مَحَلَّ
root: ح-ل-ل
قامَ / يَقومُ مَقامَ
root: ق-و-م
سَدَّ / يَسدُّ مَسَدَّ
root: س-د-د
Note that the place noun (محلّ/مقام/مسدّ) forms an إضافة with the following noun. For example, حَلَّتْ مَحَلّ صَديقتِها (“she took her friend’s place”).
Alternatively, we can add a possessive pronoun to the place noun, like in قامتْ مَقامَها (“she took her place”).
