Wehr Wednesdays #113

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

خالي الوفاض empty, vacant, free; empty-handed

Root: و-ف-ض

Page: 1271*

Example: “رَغْمَ كُلِّ تَوَقُّعاتِها، رَجَعَتْ خالِيَةَ الوِفاض”

Translation: “despite all of her expectations, she returned empty-handed”

Note:

  • This phrase is an example of الإضافة غير الحقيقية, often called the “false إضافة” or “adjective إضافة”—definitely a topic for a future post!
