Wehr Wednesdays #89

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

جيش عرمرم (jaiš) a numerous, huge army

Root: ع-ر-م-ر-م

Page: 712*

Example: “هَزَموا الجَيشَ العَرَمرَمَ بِأُعجوبة”

Translation: “they miraculously defeated the huge army”

Notes:

  • As you can see, the adjective عَرَمرَم comes from a five-letter root—in other words, it’s quinquiliteral!
  • The root ع-ر-م-ر-م appears to have been directly derived from the triliteral root ع-ر-م. The adjective عَرِم from the latter root has the same meaning as عَرَمرَم: strong, violent, vehement.
