Wehr Wednesdays #26

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

حلول ḥulūl stopping, putting up, staying; descending, coming on, befalling, overtaking; incarnation; setting in, advent, arrival (of a time, of a deadline), beginning, dawn; substitution (for s.o.)

Root: ح-ل-ل

Page: 232*

Example: “بِحُلولِ عام 2030، مِن المُتَوَقَّع أن نُحَقِّق تَقَدُّماً مَلْموساً مِن حَيْثُ التَكْنولوجيا”

Translation: “by* the year 2030, it is expected that we will make significant progress with regards to technology”

*When حُلول is preceded by the attached بـ prefix and then followed by a certain time, date, deadline etc., it literally translates as “by/with the arrival of (that time)”—and we can often simply translate that as “by”.
