Wehr Wednesdays #310

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

صعق في مكانه (makānihī) to stop dead in one’s tracks, stand as if thunderstruck

Root: ص-ع-ق

Page: 601*

Example: “حينَما رَأَوْهُما، صَعِقوا في مَكانِهِم يُحَدِّقون”

Translation: “when they saw the two of them, they stopped dead in their tracks, staring”

Notes:

  • Both the active form I verb (صَعِقَ / يَصعَقُ) and the passive one (صُعِقَ / يُصعَقُ) mean “to be thunderstruck”; the form I active verb with different vowelling (صَعَقَ / يَصعَقُ) means “to strike someone down with lightning”—for more on how form I vowelling affects meaning, see Form I Verb Vowelling Patterns
