Wehr Wednesdays #291

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

أرغى وأزبد (azbada) to fume with rage

Root: ر-غ-و

Page: 403*

Example: “رَأَيْناها تُرغي وَتُزبِدُ وَهِيَ تَمشي جيئَةً وَذَهابًا، شاتِمةً إيّاهُ بِصَوتٍ عالٍ”

Translation: “we saw her fuming with rage as she paced up and down, cursing him out loud”

Notes:

  • Both verbs in this phrase—أَرغى / يُرغي and أَزبَدَ / يُزبِدُ—are form IV and carry the same meaning “to foam/froth”; it’s the Arabic equivalent of the English “foaming at the mouth”
  • ر-غ-و is a defective root
