Academic Arabic: Bridging, Framing, and Projecting

صَباح

root: ص-ب-ح / noun / definition: morning

Today, I woke up busy. I spent all my morning hours—and half of my afternoon ones—on my rocking chair with laptop in lap, steadily ticking through my checklist.

I’ll become a morning person by force at this rate.

Yet, don’t fret, nothing can distract me from writing on this blog. And I think another post in the Academic Arabic series is long overdue.

Let’s take a peek at some more vocabulary I’ve come across (and found useful) in academic contexts:

رَدْم الهُوّة

bridging the gap

The two nouns here are in a possessive construction (إضافة):

  • رَدْم is form I verbal noun (from the verb رَدَمَ / يَردُمُ) meaning “to fill (a pit) with earth”
  • هُوّة is a singular noun meaning “pit” or “abyss”

Here’s how we might see it in context:

في إطار

within the framework/scope of

The noun إطار can refer to both a physical frame and an abstract framework.

From the same root, we get the form II verbal noun, تأطير (“to frame”), which would fit neatly into the previous post in this series, Academic Arabic: Some Form II Verbal Nouns.

For example:

إسْقاطات

projections, implications

إسقاطات literally translates as “projections”, but we often find it in the sense of “implications”.

It’s the plural form of إسقاط, a form IV verbal noun meaning “to make/let something fall”.

We might find it in a context like this:

Words and phrases like these really help to elevate your writing, just like the ones we explored in the Small but Useful Phrases series and the post Miscellaneous Advanced Phrases for Arabic Essays.

Want to see all of these super useful phrases (plus way more!) in one place? Well, I guess you’ll have to wait just a little longer…
