Wehr Wednesdays #239

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

زف البشرى إلى (bušrā) to bring glad tidings to

Root: ز-ف-ف

Page: 439*

Example: “هَرَعَتْ إلى القَريَةِ حَتّى تَزُفَّ البُشرى إلى أَهلِها”

Translation: “she hurried towards the village to deliver the good news to her family”

Notes:

  • The form I verb زَفَّ / يَزُفُّ إلى can mean “to inform someone” yet زَفَّ / يَزِفُّ (also form I; but note the vowel difference in the present tense) means “to hurry”—like the verb هَرَعَ in the example sentence.
  • The root ز-ف-ف is also related to weddings!
