Wehr Wednesdays #195

A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

حندس ḥindis pl. حنادس anādis2 dark night

Root: ح-ن-د-س

Page: 244*

Example: “تاهَتْ أَفكارُهُ فيما تاهَ هُوَ في الحِندِس”

Translation: “his thoughts wandered as he himself wandered through the dark night”

Notes:

  • As mentioned here, the 2 indicates that this noun’s plural is a diptote (ممنوع من الصرف)
  • حندس reminds me of the word for “moonlessness” we explored in Wehr Wednesdays #175, which happens to be the word that inspired the first designs in The Arabic Pages shop!
  • حندس is derived from a quadriliteral root
