A new word or phrase from the Hans Wehr dictionary, every Wednesday.

تبل tabala i to consume, waste, make sick (ه s.o.; said of love)
Root: ت-ب-ل
Page: 110*
Example: “تَبَلَني العِشقُ فَتَدَلَّهتُ”
Translation: “love has consumed me and I’ve gone insane”
Notes:
- The form V verb تَدَلَّهَ in the example sentence is derived from the root د-ل-ه. We discussed this root briefly in Root Exploration: د-ل-ه-م. The root د-ل-ه has always reminded me of the Turkish word deli (“crazy”)—I wonder if there’s a connection there?
